The Leo Lions kicked off the 2011 football season in grand style on Friday, Aug. 26, rallying for a 26-20 victory over St. Laurence on the brand new field-turf field at Gately Stadium. The win was Leo’s first over St. Laurence in 17 years.
The Vikings jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the second quarter, but Leo grabbed a 14-0 halftime advantage when Jarod Cooper threw two touchdown passes to Josh Owens and Keith Harris scored on a two-point conversion run.
St. Laurence got the lead back with a third-quarter score, but the Lions bounced back on Harris’ touchdown run. Elvin Turner sealed the victory when he returned a fourth-quarter interception for a touchdown.
Leo defensive back Laurence Huff broke up two passes to deny the Vikings when they were trying for a game-tying
score. Linebackers Hakeem Chatman and Jordan Smiley were the Lions’ leading tacklers.
“I’m really proud of our kids,” Leo coach Mike Holmes said. “We know we have talent, and tonight we had discipline—no breakdowns. A team with talent and discipline can go a long way.”
